Juette held a master's degree in mathematics, and Ernest earned a PhD in Sociology. Kathleen Cleaver’s experiences in these foreign countries would stick with her forever and ultimately helped to shape how she would go about being an activist in the Civil Rights Movement. Due to the fact that Bobby Seale was serving time in prison and Eldridge Cleaver was on probation, Eldridge Cleaver asked Kathleen Cleaver to move to California in order to help him organize around Huey Newton’s case. Huey Newton, the co-founder of the Black Panthers was jailed for the murder and assault of police officers, at this time he was one of the many leaders of the Black Panther Party who was in trouble with the law.
