This is, of course, an overview. After Wickiup the river turns and runs North towards Bend. It brings folks from all over the world in hopes of getting a chunky Redband to explode on a #6 dry fly. Those anglers who find places to fish will find good numbers of native redside rainbows and whitefish, along with pretty good angling for non-native but naturally reproducing brown trout. The Deschutes also is home to plenty of native whitefish and a very small number of native bull trout, which is a char like brook and lake trout. It is so easy to imagine the history of the canyon; the massive migratory tribes that set up camps every year to greet tremendous runs of salmon and steelhead; the fierce battles waged over prime fishing areas; great herds of elk and deer. So even in years the actual Deschutes run is down, in August and September there are often plenty of fish in the system down low. There are some great floats through here, but note regulations that require you to get out of your craft to fish. Fishing begins in the Spring and is good until October. This stretch of river has a few class III rapids, and one 3+ rapid. The river is big and can be tricky to read. Luxurious camps are standard fair and the fishing, and scenery are incredible. The redsides here aren’t the largest in the state (see the Williamson River for that), but they are numerous and fierce fighters.
