That’s right, in a little town in Oatman, Arizona things truly have gone the way of the donkey with the adorable creatures have taken over the entire town.
Wild burros, descendants of those brought by long-ago miners, wander the streets.
But with the birth of Route 66 and other smaller mining operations, Oatman hanged on, catering to the many travelers along the new highway. Officials with the Bureau of Land Management contacted the Blake Family and asked if they would care for Walter and become his new family. His siblings are German Shepherds and are very protective of Walter. During the Second World War, the government needed other metal types for the war effort, so the miners were taken to other areas and the Oatman mines were closed, leaving the gold to wait for better times. The burros are tame and can be hand fed. Often described as a ghost town, it doesn’t quite fit the category, but, close enough, considering that it once boasted over 10,000 people and now supports just a little over 100 people year-round.

The sweet sleepy-head has been called “Opal” and the gift shop owners commented about her being “dang cute” as she napped on Route 66. People travel from miles away to see the town run by donkeys and perhaps pet one of the free-range creatures.

There was over 10,000 people living in Oatman “area”. In fact, his fan base and popularity has grown so large that the town folk just bestowed upon him the title and honor of being Mayor of Oatman!
Someone just posted on Facebook that one of the donkeys are missing from Oatman and was last seen yesterday 20w Reply. Rather than being shy or skittish, they are very social animals and are happy to make friends with visitors. The town boasted two banks, seven hotels, 20 saloons, and 10 stores.
