Contact Us | Barynya, which literally means “landlady”, is a traditional Russian folk dance that combines chastushka (a traditional folk poem that is often in the form of satire) with spirited dancing. In Kalmykia the most widely performed dances are those performed by individuals or couples, although some dances may be performed in groups. The largest group is the Kazan (Volga) Tatar who originated from the historic state of Volga Bulgaria at the confluence of the Volga and Kama rivers in present day Russia. No single celebration, a holiday, a major family event, or a party is held without dances. The Ingush peoples are a native ethnic group of the North Caucasus who predominantly inhabit the Russian Republic of Ingushetia. In the past, women never got in men’s way. Kalmyk dances featuring in this video were videotaped during the annual Festival of Tulips held in the Priyutnenskiy rayon of Kalmykia in April 2015.
