The large seven-pointed star below the Union Jack Is a Federation Star that represents the six states and territories of Australia. In 1920 various designs were submitted for consideration as a new flag. Before the 19th century, the star was in limited use by the Jewish population in the Czech Republic, Austria, and parts of Germany, but in the 19th century it became a symbol of Jewish populations throughout Eastern Europe. As it was not independent, it had no recognized need for a national flag.
The flag is sometimes seen also in Blekinge, but rarely in Halland. The meaning or symbolism of a star on a flag is not universal, as each country may have a specific reason for including the shape. When Czechs, Slovaks, and Ruthenians united in 1918 to form Czechoslovakia, a simple bicolour of white over red stripes was used as a national flag. The flag of Skåne, or the Scanian Cross Flag[1] is a provincial flag representing Scania, the southernmost province of Sweden. Since the Slovak colours were red, white, and blue and the Ruthenian colours were blue and yellow, this gave symbolic reference to those parts of the nation. The ancient duchy (later kingdom) of Bohemia, a rich and powerful state in the late Middle Ages, had a coat of arms dating from the 12th century that showed a double-tailed and crowned lion, in white, rampant on a red shield.
